History
Barone Pizzini, founded in 1870 by the noble Hapsburg family of the same name, is one of the oldest wineries in Franciacorta. After more than a century of trying to enhance the region, Baron Giulio Pizzini involved a small group of enthusiasts in his estate at the end of the 1980s. Among them were some of the main players of the modern Barone Pizzini: Pierjacomo Ghitti, whose son Piermatteo is the CEO today, Ugo Colombo, the current president, and Silvano Brescianini, general manager.
Description of the company
They were the first winery in Franciacorta to believe that organic farming was essential for producing high-quality wines and at the end of the 1990s they began to convert all of their own vineyards to certified organic viticulture; to protect and feed the plants they only use substances that are found in nature or that can be obtained through simple processes, no GM, herbicides, fertilizers or chemically synthesised pesticides.
In 2007 the new cellar was inaugurated; it was built according to important criteria of eco-friendly architecture in response to their commitment to respect the environment and to the quality of their production. All stages of production are carried out with the lowest possible impact on the environment and energy consumption, thus allowing the terroir and the mood of each vineyard to be expressed to the full. Among the various expedients they have adopted in order to guarantee the sustainability of the cellar in response to the high energy requirements of the production process, the photovoltaic system is worth a mention, which can supply 55 kWp thanks to the sun’s energy. To control greenhouse gas emissions, Barone Pizzini is one of the first companies in Franciacorta to start up a carbon offsetting project that measures their wine’s carbon footprint on the planet.
Today, their wines, defined by Carlin Petrini as “Mother Earth’s bubbles”, are with “Zero Residues” to guarantee the absence of residues of chemical herbicides and synthesised pesticides.
