History

The Lantieri de Paratico family, of ancient noble origin, has its roots in the Franciacorta district as proven by evidence dating from the year 930 AD.

Its family tree is adorned by illustrious forbears, from a Beata Lucia Lantieri to an expert on military tactics, up to the famous engineer and mathematician Giacomo Lantieri who led such an adventurous life as to inspire the book Servitore vostro umilissimo et devotissimo. (Story of Giacomo Lantieri, Bonanno Editore, 1994).

The noble suffix “de Paratico”, signifies their existing settlement in the village of the same name in the province of Brescia, in the district of Franciacorta bordering on Lake Iseo. Here, in the XI century, the Lantieri family built their magnificent castle on the top of a hill, dominating the surroundings.

History narrates that this castle gave refuge to the great poet Dante Alighieri during his exile and who, inspired by the landscape, wrote some of the verses included in his Purgatory (v. 68 “…ove la costa face di se grembo).

Then, in the 1500s, the family moved to Capriolo, where it has continued the tradition of wine farming and now has the company headquarters.

The Lantieris were famous for the production of wine even then, in the sixteenth century; they were appreciated suppliers to the court of the Ganzagas in Mantua, and the courts of Ferrara and Milan, with their “Rubino di Corte Franca”, a forerunner of the wines produced today.

Winery and vineyards

The more contemporary history of this winery develops around Capriolo, an evocative medieval borough where, in the 1970s, Giancarlo Lantieri was one of the first – with oenologist Cesare Ferrari – to make his first steps in the production of sparkling wines, now recognised and acclaimed as Franciacorta D.O.C.G.

The Lantieri company nowadays produces about 160,000 bottles a year, of which 120,000 are Franciacorta D.O.C.G. and the rest are Curtefranca, cultivated in vineyards covering 20 hectares, all tended directly by the company and situated in the districts of Capriolo and Adro, in the lush green area known as Colzano, protected by the hills surrounding the Winery. The clayey silicic nature and lime content of the soil make this land particularly suitable for wine growing and Chardonnay in particular.

Centuries-old traditions, combined with today’s modern wine-making processes, have contributed to a complete series of Franciacorta DOCG and DOC wines acclaimed for their fineness and strength, elegance and taste. LANTIERI DOCG wines rest on yeasts for a period that varies from 24 months for the fresh and pleasant Brut and Extra Brut, to 30 for the delicate and widely versatile Satèn, and the Rosè fermented with Pinot Nero grapes which give it the unmistakeable pink colouring. 42 months, instead, are required for the Millesimato Arcadia, the top of production, distinguished by its structure and complexity, its fullness and intense spicy notes.

In 2001, an existing barn was modernised and turned into what is now the Corte Lantieri agritourism structure.

Warm and welcoming, with an ancient terracotta floor, wooden beamed ceilings and a huge fireplace in Sarnico stone – once used to heat the castle chambers – the farm restaurant organises tasting sessions that attract gourmets from far and near; here they can enjoy the very best dishes of local traditional cuisine, presented with the greatest care and attention.
