In an attractive industrial building in Franciacorta, where they made bricks from the earth, Contadi Castaldi perfected the concept of Satèn, by bringing two French canons, blanc de blanc and crémant together in one wine. The choice of only white grapes, Chardonnay and Pinot bianco, results in less pressure in the bottles, so that the froth is lighter and more abundant.
Satèn means silkiness, a sensation that transferred from touch to the palate can be rendered with creaminess even though this doesn’t convey the freshness of Satèn Contadi Castaldi. How can we describe it them? Maybe by taking a step back and staying with the expression “like silk”. Anything that is able to evoke the full-bodied lightness, the depth of thought, the princely humour that is as delicate as it is politely voluble, a graceful smile or a gesture that sows questions.
We are almost there, if we combine an impression of freshness, softness and immediacy, piling on the absolute yellow of gold, we cannot but help define that which is young, those that are or that feel so. Satèn evokes that guiltless malice, that unhampered wealth, the ease of flying blissfully.
In the next five years, Contadi Castaldi will produce 1,000,000 bottle; today it makes wine from 10,000 hundredweight of grapes harvested on 120 hectares of vineyards and, for many years, it is the leading producer of Satèn from Franciacorta.
Why is Satèn softer than a Brut? Because the pressure in the bottle is 4 atmospheres and a half rather than 6 atmospheres. The top Satèn is called Soul, and is made only from the best grapes of each vineyard, aged for five years in the cellar and bottled in clear glass.
